The unidentified child was bitten in the right leg Wednesday and is hospitalized in serious condition, according to Shayne Enright with the Honolulu Department of Emergency Services.
The attack happenedoff Makaha Beach along Oahu's western shore.
Enright says the boy was about 50-60 yards in the water when he started yelling that he had been bitten.
A witness told CNN that the child was body boarding when he saw him "get bumped up" by the shark.
Lifeguards rescued the victim and brought him back to shore, where they stabilized puncture wounds and a gash to his leg. CNN
