Following a $5.2 billion fine from the Nigerian Communications Commission, MTN CEO Sifiso Dabengwa has resigned from the company.

Dabengwa said his decision was “in the interest of the company and its shareholders”, and his resignation takes immediate effect.
The fine was handed out to the company for failing to cut off unregistered sim card lines, and has until the 16th of November to pay the fine.
“Due to the most unfortunate prevailing circumstances occurring at MTN Nigeria, I, in the interest of the company and its shareholders, have tendered my resignation with immediate effect,” said Mr Dabengwa in a statement.
